"Wilhelmus van Nassouwe", usually known just as "Wilhelmus" is the national anthem of both the Netherlands and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It dates back to at least 1572, making it the oldest national anthem in use today, provided that the latter is defined as consisting of both a melody and lyrics. Although "Wilhelmus" was not recognized as the official national anthem until 1932, it has always been popular with parts of the Dutch population and resurfaced on several occasions in the course of Dutch history before gaining its present status. It was also the anthem of the Netherlands Antilles from 1954 to 1964.

True. But as a result of their name, orange _has become_ our national colour. It is shown on royal holidays and sporters coming out for the Netherlands in international events (e.g. the national team in soccer, or sporters in the Olympics ) often appear in an orange outfit.

In een scriptie van historica Gudrun Dekker-Schwichow (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) uit 2008 wordt Marnix' auteurschap bevestigd op basis van muzikale en tekstuele parallellen van drie andere liederen van zijn hand. Volgens een andere theorie is de tekst door een onbekend gebleven dichter geschreven en daarna door Marnix bewerkt. Ook wordt Coornhert wel als auteur genoemd.
In 2016 kwam uit nieuw stylometrisch onderzoek Petrus Datheen naar voren als mogelijke schrijver van de tekst van het Wilhelmus. (Meertens Instituut, Universiteit Utrecht en Universiteit Antwerpen)
